Dead Woman Saves Girl From Drowning

Fishermen pulled a 6 year old girl from a lake in Carmel, about 160 miles north of New York city.

European Phoenix -- The girl survived a drowning death by clinging to the body of a dead woman.

The body of 59 year old Pamela Kaner was found floating on the surface of Lake Gleneida. The girl was holding on tight to the woman’s body, who was allegedly a friend of the girl’s mother and who was babysitting the girl while her mother took her vehicle to a garage.

Police are not yet sure how the woman died. Fishermen told police they noticed the woman and the child wading in the lake around 5:00PM Tuesday afternoon but don’t know what happened.

The fishermen said they noticed the girl in the lake holding on to a large object that looked like a plastic bag. But when they got closer they realized the 6 year old was holding on to a dead female body. The fishermen rescued the girl and called 911. Paramedics confirmed the woman’s death.

Police spokesperson John Dearman, said the woman and the girl had floated several hundred feet away from the lake’s edge.

The girl suffered no injuries but was taken to a hospital for observation. It is unclear at this time if the child knows how to swim.

Swimming is not permitted in the lake. An investigation into how the woman died is still ongoing.
