Child rape on the rise in South Africa

Child rape incidents in South Africa appear to be on the rise according to the recent reports.
European Phoenix -- Police statistics revealed a 40 percent increase in child rape cases between 2008 and 2011. More than 28 000 children under the age of 18 years were sexually assaulted from 2010 to 2011. Nearly a third of these children were under the age of 10. South Africa has one of the highest level of child rape globally.
The ISS's Crime and Justice Programme head, Gareth Newham, said the country needed to improve professional childcare facilities, especially in poor communities. "Most perpetrators are people known to the children or people who live close by." Childline said sexual abuse had severe long-term consequences on children. It urged parents to be vigilant and report any possible abuse.
