US, UK Ambassadors to Afghanistan Urged Rabbani to Return to Kabul

An informed source has disclosed new details on Tuesday’s assassination of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The source said: “Upon his departure from the Tehran Conference on Islamic Awakening, Rabbani flew to Sharjah, UAE to get reunited with his family. He had not intention to return to Afghanistan so soon.”

He added: “However, after he arrived in Sharjah, Rabbani was immediately contacted by an Afghan official who insisted that Rabbani should return to Kabul to attend an important meeting with the US and British ambassadors.”

The source went on to say: “The person who contacted Rabbani stressed that the US and British ambassador to Kabul very much insisted that he must attend that meeting.”

After the call, Rabbani cut short his visit to UAE and immediately returned to Kabul, said the source.

Rabbani, who was also head of Afghanistan's Peace Council, was killed when he was in a meeting with Taliban militants and one militant blew himself up during the meeting on Tuesday.

The militant detonated his explosives that were reportedly concealed in his turban.

Five senior Afghan officials, who were present in the gathering, were also killed in the explosion.

Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
